Sandhill cranes riding the March winds back north on their spring migration to their nesting grounds. Sandhill cranes can travel as far as 500 miles in one day by riding the southerly winds north to their rest stop in Nebraska. Over 500,000 cranes stop at the Platte River to rest and put on fat before flying thousands of miles further north to their nesting grounds. Some will go as far north as Siberia to nest. via 500px
